Tape-in vs clip-in vs weft hair extensions

There isn't a single best type of extension. The right choice depends on your hair, how often you want to wear them and how much upkeep you're happy with.

Clip-ins

Best if you want volume or length for occasions, you like to experiment, or you're new to extensions. You control everything, and there's no commitment.

Tape-ins

A flat, fairly discreet option for thin to medium hair. They sit close to the scalp but need professional fitting, careful washing and regular reapplication.

Sewn-in wefts

Often used for thicker hair and long wear. They are secure but involve braiding hair, which can mean more tension. Choose an experienced fitter.

Tip: ask for a consultation first. Bring photos, and ask what the total yearly cost will be including reapplications and removal.

Related: preventing tension and breakage, real monthly costs.

Frequently asked questions

Which type is best for fine hair?

Many stylists suggest clip-ins or lightweight tape-ins, because heavy methods can pull on fine hair. A stylist can advise based on your hair.

Which is cheapest in the long run?

Clip-ins usually cost least overall if you only wear them occasionally, since there are no salon reapplication fees.

Can I swim or exercise in them?

Fitted extensions can usually be worn for exercise with care, but check your fitter's advice on swimming and heat. Clip-ins can simply be taken out.
