How to rebuild weak nails between gel sets

Nails can feel thin or bendy after repeated gel, especially if it has been peeled off. Moisture, protection and a short break are the simplest ways to help them recover.

A simple recovery routine

  1. Take a break from gel for a few weeks if your nails feel thin or bendy.
  2. Moisturise. Use cuticle oil twice daily and hand cream after washing.
  3. Keep nails short. Short nails snag and split less while they recover.
  4. File gently in one direction with a fine file, not back and forth.
  5. Protect your hands with gloves for cleaning, and avoid using nails as tools.

Nutrition and lifestyle

A balanced diet supports healthy nails. If you're worried about nutrient deficiencies, speak to a doctor before taking supplements.

Tip: clear polish or a gentle base coat can add a protective layer while nails recover.

Mistakes that slow recovery

  • Peeling or picking off gel or polish
  • Over-buffing the nail surface
  • Long soaks in acetone or harsh sanitiser
  • Going straight into another set with no break

If you prefer to keep wearing sets, ask your technician about gentler options, and always remove gel safely using our soak-off guide.

Get nail changes checked by a doctor if they don't improve.

Frequently asked questions

How long do nails take to recover?

Fingernails grow slowly, often a few months to grow out fully, so patience helps.

Do nail strengthening polishes work?

Some people find they protect nails. Results vary, and some contain ingredients that can dry nails, so patch test and use sparingly.

When should I see a doctor?

If nails change colour, shape or thickness, or you have pain, swelling or signs of infection, see a doctor.

This guide is educational and not medical advice. Always patch test new products, follow your technician's instructions and seek professional help if you have pain, swelling or an allergic reaction.
